Brian Hayes is perhaps my favorite technical writer. His essays are engaging, interesting, clear, and fun to read. He contributed a column on scientific computing to American Scientist magazine which for many years was my reason for subscribing to the magazine. He is now retired but maintains a blog where he posts interesting stories from time to time.
